Quick answer
The best things to do in Vieques in May 2026: kayak Mosquito Bay on the May 16 New Moon (the brightest single night of the month), explore the wild refuge beaches (La Chiva, Black Sand Beach, Caracas), add a Carambola picnic, and catch the Sun Bay festival over Memorial Day weekend. A 4WD Jeep makes all of it reachable in one trip.
| Best bio-bay night | Sat, May 16, 2026 (New Moon) |
|---|---|
| Strong viewing window | ~May 11–22 |
| Sun Bay festival | Memorial Day weekend (May 23–25) |
| Weather | Mid-80s°F days · ~80°F sea |
| Getting there | Fly to VQS or take the Ceiba ferry |
Why May 2026 is a sweet spot
Four real, dateable factors line up: officially classified low season pricing; the last full dry-weather month before the June 1 hurricane season; the calmest snorkeling water of the year; and three demand spikes — Mother’s Day (May 10), the May 16 New Moon, and Memorial Day weekend (May 23–25).
Mosquito Bay & the May 16 New Moon
If you do one thing on Vieques, do this. Mosquito Bay is officially the brightest bioluminescent bay in the world (Guinness World Records). On the right night every paddle stroke leaves a trail of blue-green light. Saturday, May 16, 2026 is the New Moon — the single best night — with a strong-viewing window roughly May 11–22. Tours are kayak-only (no swimming, to protect the ecosystem), run 60–90 minutes, and launch at the end of a rough access road on the south side. You’ll need a Jeep to get there and back; there’s no taxi network out there after dark.
Note: as of July 2023 the bio bay is closed the night before, the night of, and the night after a full moon. Book your tour the same week you book your Jeep — operators sell out fast.
★★★★★"From the moment we arrived, the team set the tone for a remarkable journey… We ventured to secluded beaches and unexplored corners that would have been unreachable without the robust performance of our jeep."

Getting to Vieques: airport vs. ferry
The Ceiba–Vieques passenger ferry is the budget option — $11.25 one-way for non-residents as of April 2026, ~30–45 minutes. Direct flights into Antonio Rivera Rodríguez Airport (VQS) from San Juan, Isla Grande, or Ceiba take roughly 25 minutes — the only realistic option for a same-day Saturday-night bio-bay tour. Either way, our $20 flat airport/ferry pickup (or hotel delivery to The Blue Horizon and The Old Crow) saves the first half-day.
Best beaches in Vieques
- La Chiva (Blue Beach) — a long string of coves, each with its own parking and mood; bright turquoise water and good snorkeling. If you do one beach day, this is it.
- Black Sand Beach (Playa Negra) — park off Road 201, walk a short trail down a dry creek bed to genuinely black, magnetite-streaked sand.
- Playa Caracas (Red Beach) — the most polished refuge beach: gazebos, calm family water, mostly paved access.
- Sun Bay (Sombe) — a two-mile crescent next to Esperanza with full facilities and wandering wild horses; the family-friendly default.
Make it a beach picnic with Carambola
Pick up the Jeep, pick up the basket, drive to Caracas or La Chiva. We partner with Carambola Restaurant at The Blue Horizon — four basket options (Vegan, Cold Cuts, Sandwiches, Caribbean feast) plus optional drinks. The Carambola team needs a little notice, so ask as soon as you have your dates.
Memorial Day at Sun Bay & the Isla Nena festival
The "De Isla Grande a Isla Nena" festival is a recurring two-day, free, beachside music festival at Sun Bay — a stage facing the ocean, boats rafted offshore, food kiosks along the sand. Parking fills fast on festival days, so leave early and plan your bio-bay tour for another night of the trip.
A sample 3-day itinerary
- Day 1 — Arrive & Sun Bay. Fly into VQS or take the morning ferry; we meet you with the Jeep. Drop bags, grab a Carambola basket, late afternoon at Sun Bay.
- Day 2 — Refuge beaches, then bio bay. Caracas in the morning, La Chiva or Black Sand in the afternoon; shower and dinner, then the bio-bay tour after dark.
- Day 3 — Esperanza & slow down. Café on the malecón, a leisurely snorkel, lunch in town, a sunset drive, then drop the Jeep at whichever point fits your travel day.
Build your May trip around the right Jeep
The New Moon, the festival, and the calmest water of the year all fit one 31-day window.
